Francesca Dotto, born in Treviso, embarked on a brilliant soprano career in 2012, making an early debut at the Teatro la Fenice (“… offering the Venice audience a comely yet piquant Musetta, her sensuality mischievous and without artifice, and with control of her vocal skills that sacrificed nothing to the stage spontaneity of this whimsical coquette”, Teatro.it).
Her international career continued as Lucrezia Borgia at the Teatro Verdi, Padua, and La traviata at the Teatro Verdi, Sassari, and it was this role as Violetta that led her to emerge on the international opera scene, appearing at top theatres in Italy (Opera di Roma in the famous production directed by Sofia Coppola with costumes by Valentino Garavani; Teatro San Carlo, Naples; Maggio Musicale Fiorentino; Teatro La Fenice, Venice; Teatro Petruzzelli, Bari; Teatro Filarmonico, Verona) and in other countries (Athens, Lima, Tokyo and Berlin).
Her projects for the 2026/27 season, including her debut as Mimì in La bohème by Ruggero Leoncavallo at the Teatro Regio, Turin, and her debut at the Deutsche Oper, Berlin, where she will return to the role of Musetta in Puccini’s La bohème, epitomise a career which the singer has built with great care, centring it around some of the most emblematic roles in the repertoire of a lyric soprano, directing her attention too towards Belcanto and to more uncommon characters such as the title role in Respighi’s Maria Egiziaca di Respighi, staged at the Teatro Malibran in Venice, conducted by Manlio Benzi and with stage direction, stage sets and costumes by Pier Luigi Pizzi (also available as a recording by Dynamic). For this reason, the numerous leading roles in her repertoire include Mozart’s Donna Anna, Donna Elvira and Fiordiligi; Norma, Anna Bolena, Elena in Marin Faliero, Luisa Miller, Elvira in Ernani, Desdemona in Verdi’s Otello, Amelia in Simon Boccanegra, Leonora in Il trovatore, Micaela in Carmen and Puccini’s Mimì, Liù e Cio Cio-san: these roles have brought her great success at theatres such as the Wiener Staatsoper, Semperoper Dresden, Teatro la Fenice, Teatro Regio di Parma, Comunale di Bologna, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Opéra de Lausanne, Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège, Opéra National de Lyon, Greek National Opera, Festival Granda, Lima; Tokyo Bunka Kaikan, NCPA Beijing and Kömische Oper, Berlin.
Amongst others, she has worked with conductors Myung-Whun Chung, James Conlon, Daniel Oren, Andrea Battistoni, Jader Bignamini, Riccardo Frizza, Diego Fasolis, Oksana Lyniv, Stefano Montanari, Donato Renzetti, Daniele Rustioni, Speranza Scappucci, Fabrizio Maria Carminati, Roberto Abbado, Nello Santi, Omar Meir Wellber and stage directors Henning Brockhaus, Davide Livermore, Damiano Michieletto, Francesco Micheli, Stefano Ricci, Ferzan Ozpetek, Stefano Poda, Graham Vick and Ai Weiwei.
She also devotes her attention to the choral-symphonic repertoire, singing in Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle, the Verdi Messa da Requiem and the Mahler Symphony no. 4.
Francesca Dotto has a sound academic grounding. After completing her musical studies, graduating as a flautist from the Conservatory of Bologna in 2006 under the supervision of Maestro Enzo Caroli, and with distinction in opera singing from the Conservatory of Castelfranco Veneto in 2011 under the guidance of soprano Elisabetta Tandura, she excelled in competitions such as the Voci Verdiane international competition, Busseto, the Iris Adami Corradetti international opera singing competition, Padua, and the Festival Internazionale Scaligero Maria Callas, Verona.
